SCLERAL CONTACTS
Scleral contacts are large-diameter gas permeable lenses intended to to vault over the entire corneal surface and rest on the white part of the eye called the sclera making them more comfortable than traditional rgp lenses that rest and press on the cornea. This allows scleral lenses to functionally provide irregular corneas with a perfectly smooth optical surface to correct vision problems caused by certain corneal diseases such as keratoconus and pellucid degeneration. The space between the cornea and the scleral lens bathes the front of the eye to provide comfort for people with severe dry eyes otherwise can't tolerate contact lens wear.
Who are good Candidates for Scleral Contacts?
A. people who have high refractive error who wish to have sharper vision. High refractive error combinations of any of the above below listed. High defining over > 10D in prescription

-Hyperopia
-Astigmatism
-Presbyopia
-Aniosmetropia
B. Post Lasik/PRK patients whos corneas are too thin for traditional soft contact lenses or find them too drying and those who do not wish to wear glasses again
C. Patients with corneal conditions such as keratoconus, pelluid degeneration or other corneal irregularities.
D. Patients who have severe dry eyes that can't tolerate normal soft contacts.''
