How long does my contact lens prescription last?

Contact lens prescriptions expire one year from your fitting.  This is to help ensure that your eyes and contacts are continuously a good, healthy match.  If you would like to add a contact lens fitting on top of your annual eye exam, please let us know when you schedule your appointment.

What can contacts do?

If you are interested in contacts for full-time or part-time wear, our doctors can determine if you are a good candidate.  Contacts can correct:

• Presbyopia (fix distance  & reading together)
• Myopia (near-sightedness)
• Myopia control
  
• Hyperopia (far-sightedness)
  
• Astigmatism
  
• Sports vision needs
  
• Social needs
  
• Eye color changes or enhancements

Why is it an additional service?
In general, contacts are cosmetic devices that are elective, not medically necessary.  They are also worn internally, carrying different health risks than glasses, which are worn externally.  Therefore, contacts are  medical devices that require a prescription.  To get that prescription, additional work is done beyond the standard annual eye exam.  Each lens, from specialty to common, must fit properly in order to be safe for the unique and specific environment of your eyes.

Our goal is to optimize your vision and minimize your health risks with contact lens wear.  Some years, your fitting will be simple and some years, it will be more complicated, but it needs to be done once a year to maintain a valid contact lens prescription and to buy contacts.
